STOPPED Program - This is a parental notification system administered by the Onondaga County Sheriff's Dept. to help reduce the number of young drivers involved in motor vehicle accidents. Parents voluntarily register their car (or cars), receive an id decal for the front window and are then notified if a driver under the age of 21 is stopped by law enforcement officers. The notifications are mailed (postal or e-mail) to parents and thereby allow parents to enforce any parental rules/consequences. Call 435-3044 to register.
Graduated Driving Law - There are basically 3 different types of licenses for individuals under the age of 18; a Junior Learner's Permit, a Limited Junior License, and a Junior License. Here are the guidelines in a nutshell:
All who hold a Junior Learner's Permit, regardless of age, must have a supervising driver who is at least 21 years of age at all times and cannot drive alone. You may graduate to a Limited Junior License if you pass the road test during the 6-month waiting period (beginning when you receive your Junior Learner's permit). If you wait until after the 6-month waiting period and then take the road test, you are issued a Junior License. The following restrictions apply to all Limited Junior and Junior License holders until they reach the age of 18 (or 17 with Driver's Education):
1) No more than 2 passengers under the age of 21 (unless members of the immediate family; 2) All passengers must be seatbelted; 3) You can only drive after 9:00 pm if you are traveling to and from a credit-bearing, school course, work, medical appointments, or transporting an immediate family member to day care. YOU CANNOT DRIVE TO AND FROM OTHER SCHOOL ACTIVITES (i.e. - team practices, games, school clubs, play practice, choir practice, performances, meetings, etc.).
